All Bones Connect!
“The toe bones connect to the foot bone, the foot bone connect to the heel bone…..” Delta Rhythm Boys- Dry Bones
It’s no secret that if you are experiencing toe, foot, or lower limb issues, it’s best to visit a podiatrist. As a profession we spend years dedicated to the study of eliminating foot and lower limb pain and discomfort.
We have treated lower limb pain successfully with a wide range of resources, be it exercise prescription, show wave therapy, dry needling, cupping, laser therapy, footwear or the introduction of custom-made arch supports and orthotics.
The wonderful surprise for most patients, is the resolution, or improvement of their back pain, which remarkably they fail to disclose in the initial treatment, due to it being seemingly irrelevant and not related to the foot.
Unfortunately, patients are with the perception that the scope in podiatry is a very small and narrow one which is totally untrue. We are trained to look at the individual as a whole and that includes posture and gait pattern, not just the feet.
We now are aware of the connection between body parts and bones, and that the feet form the foundation or building blocks to the rest of your body. If the weight distribution, gait pattern or musculature is imbalanced these transfers upwards to the rest of your body, including your back, causing long term effects and loss of mobility.
Does this mean that a physiotherapist, myotherapist, osteopath or chiropractor is not required? Absolutely Not!
If you have been injured during an activity or exercise, then they should be your first point of call. Back pain or injuries should not be treated lightly.
However, if you have been experiencing chronic discomfort for no apparent reason or having treatment for this with no complete resolution, then why not go in to see your podiatrist and have a foot analysis?
Generally, a good physiotherapist or other allied health professional, who are well trained, will recognize the improvement that can be made and refer you onto a podiatrist.
Another thing to note, is an orthotic custom made by a podiatrist, is very different to something you may receive in a box or a packet from another health professional. More importantly they support small business here local in Australia. Not everyone requires the same prescription lenses in their glasses, so too are no two feet the same!
You can be referred into see a podiatrist through other providers, by why not be more proactive towards your own health care and make the decision for yourself?
