What is a podiatrist?
A podiatrist is someone university qualified to prevent, diagnose, treat, or rehabilitate problems affecting the foot, ankle, and leg. Podiatrists manage biomechanics as well as dermatology. They are educated to recognise musculoskeletal problems and tissue damage which often stem from underlying health conditions. In Australia, there is no difference between a chiropodist and a podiatrist, both are foot doctors who resolve foot related issues.
An appointment with a podiatrist is not unlike other health professionals. A background will be obtained, for example, previous surgeries, injury, and medication. Range of motion and quality of motion of your joints might be checked, gait analysis may be undertaken.
Ideally, to ensure foot health, much like eye health or dental health, a podiatrist should be visited at least once a year. Whilst you may have the ability to self-care for your feet, you can visit a podiatrist to educate yourself or how this can be improved.
You do not require a referral in Australia to visit a podiatrist, and if you have private health, part of this consult maybe able to be claimed.
It is important to not take your feet for granted. Because feet can be hidden in shoes, foot problems unfortunately, tend to be the most common health problems.
